Jeff insists on buying him lunch, too, and Jeff was right— Stephan had forgotten how good the Greek food is here. The sandwiches suck, the pizza and salads are all right, and everything else is kind of "eh," but the falafel really is damn good. The lunch special comes with a huge plate of fries, which they share. If Stephan jerks back like his fingers have been burned the one time their hands meet reaching for fries at the same time, well, Jeff has the good grace to ignore it.

Maybe things will be sort of all right after all.

Not that Stephan isn't a huge fucking idiot or anything, but still. Maybe the consequences of his brain taking a vacation and letting his body lead the show for one horribly mistaken minute aren't that big of a deal. If Jeff's willing to not only ignore it, but still try to be friends with Stephan, he's not going to argue. It's way more than he hoped for.

* * * *

The rest of the week drags by in fits of anxiousness and stress, interspersed with huge lulls of boredom. Midterms are this week, but Stephan's only test is in French. Instead, he has paper proposals due for Method and Theory and American Lit. He's been working on those for the last couple of weeks, so he's feeling fairly set. At least, when he's being rational. These are the only big assignments he will turn in for both classes, and he's a little freaked out. He's not sure what exactly he's freaked out about, aside from some nebulous feeling that the professors are going to tell him his proposals suck, he sucks, and he should just drop out of school now and save them all the trouble of failing him.

Yeah. Because that's even slightly realistic. He's a hard worker, a good student, always prepared, and he usually has something to contribute to the discussions. He's even totally caught up in his reading, after a weekend of being a loser and hiding out in the library and his apartment. His professors seem to like him. So why does he still have a knot in his stomach?

Maybe it's vicarious—tension on campus ratchets up to a huge degree during midterms week, to say nothing of finals. Everyone's got that sleepless, terrified look in their eyes, and the freshmen look like they could cry at any moment. The girls are all in sweats with their hair twisted into sloppy buns held in place with pencils, and the guys look like they've been wearing the same clothes since they arrived in August. Kids are sleeping on the sofas scattered around the library, and the people working at the coffee carts can barely keep up with the demand.

It's actually kind of funny, in a schadenfreude sort of way.

Of course when Madame Georges starts prepping them for the French midterm, Stephan totally freaks out. Memorization is not his strongest skill, and while he's been doing fine on the weekly quizzes, he's worried about being able to recall stuff from two months ago.
